State Health and Centre for Disease Control

The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka (RGUHS) established the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of State Health and the Centre for Disease Control (RGIPH&CDC) in July 2013 as its renewed commitment towards strengthening State Health capacity & system development in the state, country and region.

The University has launched a special post graduate degree - Master of State Health-(Honours) in the academic year 2014-15, a significant contribution to strengthening the pool of State Health practitioners, teachers and researchers to take leadership positions in the state, country and region to evolve, implement and sustain State Health programmes committed to the broad objectives of promoting ‘Right to Health’ and ‘Social Determinants’. These objectives are very relevant to the current challenges of ‘Health for All’ and ‘Universal Health Coverage’ in the region. Through this course the RGUHS has initiated a new focus which goes much beyond the scope of the current State Health courses in the country.

Goals:
  • To create a pool of trained State Health practitioners and researchers who can take up leadership positions in the state, country and region to implement contextually relevant State Health programs and direct research.
  • Practice the specialty efficiently, backed by scientific knowledge and skill base.
  • Exercise empathy and a caring attitude and maintain high ethical standards in State Health practice and in interactions with colleagues and the community.
  • Continue to evince keen interest in continuing education irrespective of whether he/she is in a teaching institution or is practicing.
  • Be a motivated ‘teacher’ – defined as one keen to share knowledge and skills with a colleague or a junior or any team member/learner.

  • Specific Objectives:
    At the end of the MPH program in the context of the above broad objectives and in the context of the competency framework adopted for this Honors program the following will be the specific objectives:

    - A State Health professional orientated to the values of equity, rights, gender equality, ethics, Integrity and quality in State Health practice.


    - A State Health professional having competency in the following areas:
  • Socio-Cultural and Community Health
  • Research
  • State Health System
  • State Health Management
  • State Health Nutrition
  • State Health Capacity Building
  • Leadership and Governance
  • Universal Health Policy
  • Ecological Sensitivity/Environmental Health
  • State Health Laws, Ethics and Human Rights
  • Plural Health Systems
  • International and Global Health
  • Disaster Preparedness and Response

  • A State Health professional conversant with National and State Health programmes related to:
  • Communicable diseases
  • Non-communicable diseases
  • Woman, child and adolescent health


  • Advisory Committee:

    An advisory committee chaired by Dr.S.Chandrashekar Shetty, former Vice Chancellor, RGUHS, Click here for profile provided the guidance to the institute till May 2020 from the time of its establishment. From May 2020 the monitoring committee under the Chairmanship of the Hon.Vice Chancellor, RGUHS Dr. S Sacchidanand is providing the quidance and oversees the activities and progress of the institute.


    Moving any university towards valuing self-examination and change can be daunting and sometimes even perceived as threatening. To be effective, the plan document requires ownership at all levels. One of the most critical components for developing that sense of ownership and empowerment is participation. Having students, staff, administrators, and university to actively involve in this process can make it less threatening and more welcoming.


    To enable a qualitative transformation in RGUHS, the Quality Assurance Cell of RGUHS proposes an initiative to establish Quality Network of affiliated institutions.
